Does it matter if I use a short or long action for 6.5x284, would there be any disadvantages to either one ?? Thanks for the help.

That would depend on whether or not you want it to be a repeater. With heavier bullets like 142's, a long action will feed from the magazine. A short action is fine for a single shot shooting.

Can you extract a loaded round through a short action ejection port or do you have to pull the bolt?

I have never seen a projectile turn in flight and return to the ship that fired it.  I cannot however, make that same statement regarding missiles.

It depends on the OAL you have. If you throat it short enough it will.

My 142 SMK load will not extract from a short action, which is one reason I use a long action for that round.

My Cartridge OAL is 3.227"

If you use this front baffle, it will give you another 1/8" of bolt travel.
