My Dog drives me crazy!

« on: January 29, 2009, 04:32:13 PM »

What would be the range to shoot crows with a 17HMR?  I've had one for a while and just never worked with it shooting over plinking 50 yds or so.  I was wondering because I am sitting here watching a group of them where they gather in my SE field every day.  Only about 6 to 8 a day but they walk and peck over there all day.  Last year they got my corn seed after I planted and it made me a bit resentful.  I would say they are between 125 and 175 yards most of the time.

 Just wondering.

Sight it in at 1" high @ 125 yards. That should make you zeroed at 100 and 150. Atleast it did on my gun.  I use mine as a walking gun for prarie dogs and basically aim dead-on out from 0-150.

Thanks for the info guys.  I am zeroed at 100 yd now so I will check the 125 yd and 150 yd hit points,  and then see if I can reduce the crow population on my place.

I'll let you know how it turns out.  I will give it a try this Tuesday. Sky should be bright blue and that's when the crows are best.

Redwing, a friend of mine shot 2 geese at 145 yds with his .17hmr and both got up in the air for about 50 yds then crashed back down stone dead. They were pulling out the winter wheat shutes,so a similar resentment. I think those crows of yours are in serious danger of high speed lead poisoning! Grin

As long as you don't have feathers and spend a lot of time in trees then your safe.  Wink

Hey Rohk,

I showed my wife this thread and after seeing my post and your last one she asked me, "Didn't you always want to build a tree house?"   Grin

As is typical of life, I finally got a few minutes to sight in the .17HMR today.  So I go out and measure 125 yds.  Set the target, zero the rifle in 4 shots.  So far so good.  I come inside and wait a few minutes for some crows to come by in the field where they congregate.  After 5 minutes I look out the window and there they are!  25 yds out the back door!   Smiley  So I load a round in the old Handi Rifle, crack open the door and dispatched a crow to heaven. Now I am waiting to see when they come back in the other field so I can try the 125 to 175 yd shots.
