Chris,
On the contrary, setting the exact head space that you are after is the whole purpose of the Rem-Age Barrel Nut System. Savage for years has offered that exact flexability. This is why so many Savage owners have more barrels than they do actions. The Switch Barrel Savages are a way of life.

You can head space off of a brass casing. I try to talk my customers out of that as a brass casing can easily compress when the barrel is tightened down and the accuracy of the actual head spacing can be affected. I prefer to work from a carbide steel Go Gauge.

I am talking with Shilen at this time. They are sitting on the fence at this time and not fully committed. If you guys would like Shilen to bring their barrels to the Rem-Age Switch Barrel party let them know. The more they are requested the more likely they are to tool up and offer this option.

Jim,

What would be the most effective way to lobby Shilen on this--do you have a phone contact or an email address that would get us to someone there who would understand what we are requesting?

Kevin,
I just heard from Shilen yesterday that they will be offering their version of my Rem-Age Barrels. They are looking at additional machining steps and the cost will be higher than their Savage Pre-Fit Barrels. I do not have the details as of yet but I was informed that they would cost me more money than the Savage Pre-Fits I currently order from them.

John,
I have three Rem-Age Barrels coming in from McGowen very soon now. These will be my first and I do plan to do some R&D work with these before I place an inventory order for my stocking supplies. I have a 26" - 6.5-06 and two 26" - 6BR Norma Barrels being built up product testing and pre-production testing and sales. I have a Remington Model 700 sitting here waiting on the 6.5-06 all ready. I plan to build this one up for my own use and product testing (fit, finish, test firing and the sort).

I bought a Rem-age barrel nut and made a 300 Whisper on a 722 Remington action. I have not had a opportunity to fire it yet.

My question is since the action and barrel are blue and the barrel nut is stainless what paint or bake on finish could I use on the barrel to match the blue finish of the action and barrel.  Any suggestions would be appeciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Centex Bill,
Very good question, I am not the best person to ask that question of. I am going to suggest you go the "Savage Bolt Action Centerfire" section under "Firearms Tech" and ask it there.

Mr. Jim, I would like to see barrels chambered for the .373 boltface such as 221 Fireball, 20 Practical, 22 Vartarg Turbo and 6mm Whisper. Do you know of any gunsmiths that will convert an existing barreled action to a Rem-Age?

8ball,
I see no problems with making the calibers you mentioned available for the Rem-Age conversion. If you are using a Remington 700 Action there are no special parts needed to be converted to a Rem-Age conversion rifle. You just remove the Remington Barrel and attach one of the Rem-Age Barrels in it's place.

Jim, awesome idea and gives me another alternative than going with a Savage purely for the switch barrel capability (not that there is anything wrong with that... Smiley).

My question is, per the link on Snipershide previously posted, the barrel nut seemed clear the AICS stock channel, and I would imagine it would clear the McRee stocks as well since there is plenty of room in front of the recoil lug, but what about typical McMillan, Manners, wood stocks etc.? I would imagine some inletting would need to be done to the stock? Just wondering if anyone already had experience with this...

The nut pictured in Snipershide was the Pac Nor nut, which looked sleeker (thinner) on the outer dimension than a standard Savage nut, so wondering if that was the reason it cleared the AICS channel...

Thanks.

Pklin:

I used one of Jim's Ren-age barrel nuts to make a 300 whisper on Remington 722. I used the orginal factory wooden stock and had to widen the barrel channel slightly in front of the recoil lug.  Took about about 5 minutes with a Dremel tool.  I plan to use pilar bed the stock with aluminum pilars from Brownells and glass bed the action.  So far I have on shot a couple of test rounds but the barrel nut system seemed to work well with no problems.

Thanks much Centex Bill for the info, much appreciated!

What is the accuracy result so far? I know someone earlier posted that accuracy got better after action truing, but wondering to what degree "better" represents...

Pklin:

Only shot a couple of rounds to fireform the case and check for primer back out.  Cases look good.  Will put scope on and load some serious test rounds for shooting at the range this week end.   Made this rig by taking a new factory take off barrel in 300 Remington SHORT ultra mag and cutting the breach end off to elimate old chamger and threading it for the Rem-age barrel nut and rechambering for 300 whisper (30/221 Remington). There was enough meat left on the breach end of the barrel to allow this. Barrel is 1 in 10 twist.  I am hopefully this project will be a shooter, if not I don't have a lot invested.

Merry Christmas all,
