I have a Savage factory laminate stock (bought new in 1998) and I have managed to bugger up the finish without damaging the wood on a spot about the size of a penny, right on the comb.  I don't want to do a total refinish, so can anyone tell me what the factory used for finish in 1998?  I'd like for it to be lacquer, but if it's urethane, can a repair be blended in?  Any suggestions on a brand to use?
Thanks, Steve

If it's urethane, it will be really tough to blend in.  You can try and then rub it out with medium and fine compound but it won't be perfect.  If it's lacquer, you can test a small inconspicuous spot with denatured alcohol.......if it dissolves, it's lacquer and can be blended in really well.
