Looking to swap barrels on my 300 WM to a 6.5mm round.

Currently have a long action magnum bolt face.  I'd like to do the 260 AI but the cons to me are a new bolt head and fire-forming.  Is the 264 WM a viable option?  Any info on the 6.5 WSM?

Thanks for any advice.

The .264 WM is the most viable option IMO. I would go with a quality 8 twist barrel for the 140 grain bullets. Keep the barrel at least 26" long otherwise you get .270 performance and more noise. Your current bolt face and magazine will work just fine for the .264 WM. Keep the barrel cool and use slow burning powders. The .260 AI is also another nice round but as you mentioned it would require a new bolt head and probably a new magazine box if you want a repeater. The dies for the .260AI will be more expensive also.

It's better to shoot for the moon and hit the fencepost than to shoot for the fencepost and hit the ground!

Right on!!  When I finally found a Redding Deluxe set for my 260 Improved....the price nearly floored me...the most expensive dies I've ever purchased.

I use Lee Collet .260 Rem Dies. They work great. I did break down and buy a RCBS FL sizing die. Prob. not the best one on the market. I still one an F Class match w/ Rem sorted brass and the Lee collet .260 Rem die though and the lee seater die that came with it.

Are the 6.5-300 WinMag, 6.5-300 Weatherby, or 6.5 STW not options?

No mention of the 6.5 Vias?  Wink

6.5 BR dies is all that is needed.

New bolt head and barrel.  I would go with 6.5-06AI myself.

To the original question though - it is way more than a hop skip and a jump from 260AI to 264 win mag!! Why were those your two choices?
