One of our local FFLs just bought one for her CCW.  I didn't understand why she wanted that particular cartridge for defensive use but it's her choice.

I never thought about chambering a rifle in that.

20 rounds in a pistol is always a great thing. The recoil is minimal also which is good for most women shooters.

The biggest complaint I have is that the energy levels are about the same as a 22 magnum. Not saying 22 magnum is a slouch but the 5.7 gets hyped up to a point that you would think it is much stronger than what it is. The Grendel pistol in 22 magnum is comparable and has even more rounds at 30.

In a rifle I think it would be neat but there are a few other loadings that would work just as good. Now if you had a Five Seven pistol and a PS90 (or even better, a P90) then having a bolt gun in the round would make all kinds of sense. I believe in having ammunition commonality among all my firearms and right now I have 223, 9mm, recently added 45ACP and of course 22lr.

I too believe in having multiple rifles or handguns in each cartridge.

Thank you Hammer. Santa has the 49th in his bag I hope. Now all I have to do is find a bolt head that it will work with. Fred are you listening?

Or if you only want a couple of rounds I could ship you a few

It seems like Midway has it in their sales flyer every month.

Fred, I think you need to make a .20 or .17 wildcat out of this round. I wonder what it would do with a 32gr. .20 cal tip or a 24gr. .17 cal tip!

The wildcatting part will be easy. I'm gonna start with some ammo and a magazine from a Five-Seven pistol and build a rifle around it.

A problem I have had with the shorter cases is that they fall off the bolt face before ejecting. That is as soon as the case exits the chamber it "ejects" off the bolt face and falls inside the receiver between the lugs and breech face. What I did to fix it was disable the ejector as a temporary fix. Next step is to machine through the receiver on the right side up to the breech face so the round can ejector normally. This will be on a permanent 45 ACP build or maybe I just rechamber for 450 Bushmaster and not worry about it.

Hopefully the 5.7x28 is long enough to eject correctly.

I have always been interested in this little cartridge, as well as the 5.45x39.  Would be interested in knowing how the bolt gun works out.

My plan is to build an action specifically sized for that cartridge.

I wonder if one of the new 22 Hornet/221 Fireball/223 Remington actions would be easier to adapt. I was looking for a used and abused one for a 7.62x25 Tokarev build. It seemed like it would have been a perfect fit for my project because the Tokarev rounds I was loading were 1.75" long when using the heavier bullets at subsonic levels.

Unfortunately those actions are still relatively new so there were any that were available cheap.

I'm looking at something the size of a CZ 527 American. You need the smaller diameter bolt to keep the cases on the bolt face till they flip out the port.

I did the Mil x .03937 and came up with .224, so the 5.7 is a 22 on steroids . . ?  Right?  I have a .17 Rem Fireball, and for these old fingers - that is about as small a caritridge as I think I want to try to reload.  Can you imigine that small a cartridge and holding the bullets and getting the powder into it, when there are better cartridges out there that will do nearly the same thing.  I guess boys will be boys and we just have to play don't we . .  Grin  Grin Grin Grin

The 5.7x28 has virtually the same velocity and energy as a 22 magnum when comparing the same bullet weights. A 32 grain is 2350 fps and a 40 grain is 1950 fps in the 5.7x28. A 40 grain is 1910 fps in the 22 magnum.

These stats are from Wikipedia, the easiest to research. There might be some minor diferences but both the 5.7x28 and 22 magnum are still pretty close. Personally I would like the 5.7 because I can reload it where the magnum can't be or at least easily.
