here's a closer view of the .338
Results with 250 and 300 grain SMK's are promising at 1000 yards. With a little development, I'd like to get some 300 grain loads out to 1700 yards or so and see how they run.
Darrell
Don't get me wrong because I am very lucky/blessed to have a 1000 yard range within an hour of my house, but I would love to try shooting at targets at 1700 yards. That must be incredible.

Hey scaxeman, what are the details on that 338 you have there? How did you modify the action etc?

efm: This is a factory prototype. Savage sent us a couple of them for testing and evaluation last month, and we have been making recommendations on fit, ergonomics, and performance ever since. The engineers have been outstanding, sometimes overnighting us "updated" parts for the rifles to fix issues we have discovered.

I am doubly lucky, I live ~5 minutes from a 1000 yard range, to get to some private property to stretch out to a mile or so is about an hour's drive

Anyone who gets prototype rifles sent to them by Savage is one lucky guy. I want on that list! I was kind of sad to see that they don't have the 10fp 308 20" anymore on their website. I'm been giving some thought to a shorter rifle, but I still want the full bull barreled rifle. I was kind of hoping there might be something like that for 2010. The precision carbine is nice, but I want the full heavy barrel.

I'm assuming then it's probably a large shank action and has larger locking lugs and lug abutments?

The 10pc works really well, teddy12b. I didn't like packing my 10fp around, but the 10pc seems to be just light enough for a woods gun as well as bench work. I know theres not that much differince in weight, but it seems better. blue

What really got me started on the shorter barrel idea was the Remington SPS Tactical's in 308 with a hogue stock. I just kept thinking that I'd love to have the Savage built version of this rifle so I can have the best accuracy.

Savage Arms now has a Facebook page on which they are showcasing some of their 2010 offerings. You can link to the page from the Savage Arms website. There is a new version of the predator hunter with accustock and fluted barrel, as well as a cool looking tactical Mark II. Go check'em out.

The new facebook page is awesome!!! There are a couple of new rifles I'd like to try out, between the markII TR and the 12FCV I don't know what I'd like to take out to the range more.
