Seagulls! lol I am heading out to the Keys next week for 2 weeks of fishing and am thinking about doing some varmint removal while I am there. The damn seagulls always come down and snatch my $8 each live baits out of the spread behind my boat. I am thing about a hydraulicly dampened swivel mount for my 7mm mag and something along the lines of a 140gr hp @ 3200, but would listen to all input offered by the resident " Varminators" on here. This summer when I was down there we dumped a big bag of popcorn out before we set the baits out and then trolled away. Every seagull for 100 miles was diving on the popcorn " slick " and we fished without problems. It would be a lot more fun to shoot them though so feel free to chime in.

I was on a five day trip on the Polaris Supreme throwing iron jigs for yellowtail off of Guadalupe Island (Baja), I leaned back with an 8' Calstar jig rod, heaved a Salas 6X in a ballistic trajectory and absolutely destroyed a seagull flying about 30' in front of me.

I have no idea if seagulls are protected or not.

But the idea of shooting a 7 mag from a boat on the water, with the possibility of other boats around, and ricochets of the water, would give me pause. I would think a shotgun shooting shot would be better anyway. I have no idea of whether you'd need non-lead shot or not either?

I'm just thinking about it from the angle of shooting prairie dogs across a great big meadow, and wanting cartridges/bullets combos that will not carry ricochets for long distances.

Not sure if this helps you or makes it worse?

Slowpoke evidently I had my tongue held a little too firmly in cheek! My request for advice was an attempt to lighten up everyones day. While I do carry a sidearm in the console anytime I'm on the water in Florida( drug pirates) I would never carry a rifle or shoot a high power rifle over the water.

Yeah believe it or not pirates are not just in Somalia! Drug runners will board your boat, throw you over the side and then use your boat to run a load of drugs to a place on the coast where people are waiting. They will just jump out and leave your boat where it crashed. It does not happen every day, but is frequent enough that you need to be aware of it. My boat is fast enough to outrun most of them, and if not, I do have that tuned .40 in the console.

I vote for defensive carry but the seagulls get a pass.

Over on our west coast anybody hurting a gull if they were on a fishing charter would likely be made to walk the plank by the Captain.
