hello again guys. I ened up loading both the sierra 60 grain varminter and 60 grain hornady vmax. as far as i could tell i had a little better grouping with the vmax compared to the hollow point sierra. they were both very close im comparision but i loaded up some more of the hornadys. I also found out my gun really opens up over 24 grains of powder. it likes 23 grains of benchmark the best.

i think im getting a descent group now for me behind the trigger. im going to load around 20 of each and shoot 5 shot groups of both to really compare them against each other.

the way the group tightened up with a heavier bullet im kind of curious what i would do with something even heavier. Like i have said i dont really want to go over 60 grain bullet but im curious now.

will try to get a target picture up of the hornady bullets

both the sierra and hornady were loaded with wsr primers winchester brass 2.250 OAL 23 grains benchmark

granted theese two targets are some where in the 150 200th round i have ever shot off a bench. its definetly alot different then hunting thats for sure. i need alot more practice.

I`m having pretty good luck with the 75 A-Max (.010" off the lands)/25.5gn of RL-15/BR-4`s ... will shot in the .3`s with ease. I`ve been wanting to try the 75 BTHP.

flatlander, your target with the Sierra 60gr HP looks very familar, I have several that look like that. Perhaps it wasn't
you after all.

what do you mean? did you get a flyer also or is that just me doing that?

Finally had a chance to try out the new IMR8208XBR powder in my model 12 LRPV with a 1:9 twist. Using Dan Newberry's system for developing the Optimum Charge Weight I started with usual 10% below maximum and worked my way up in essentialy .2 grain increments. Nothing startling until I reached 24.4 grains which gave me a 0.137" three shot group. This was followed by a 0.159" group at 24.6 grains, and this again was followed by a 0.200" group at 24.8 grains. The groups either side of this were approx. 1/2" so it looks like I stumbled upon a node. The bullets used were 53 grain Sierra Matchkings and the average velocities were 3188fps,3244fps and 3259fps respectively. At no time did these velocities vary by more than 47fps tops. The temperature was 34 degrees C ( 92 degrees F). Winchester brass was used for everything and it was sized using the Lee Collet die. Runout was 1 1/2 thou or less measured just where the ogive starts on the bullet. The next step is to load five rounds of each charge and see if it repeats.
I really wanted to see how this powder was effected by temperature extremes as they say it's very stable from well below zero to in excess of one hundred degrees F. I don't expect to shoot it at these extremes but the chamber and barrel temperature can get much hotter than the ambient temperature that you're shooting in which could hurt groups. Hope this helps. By the way, I used a Redding Competition Bullet seater and all charges were weighed.

My 1/9" rigs (FP10s) diets are 28g W748 behind a 50gr Vmax, any SRP.
Puts them in at 1/2"-5/8" @ 100yds.
Also 69g SMK also with 24.5g BLC2 or 24.5g Varget any SRP.
All moly coated also, 2.230" COL.

Starting to get good results out of Berger 70vld's for the longer range stuff:
24.7g Varget
Hornady match chamber-fired brass
rem. benchrest primers
seated to kiss the lands - happens to be 2.365 COAL for my FCP-k rifle

Approximately 1/2MOA@200 yards:

flatlander I've shot several Vmax groups with 4 close together and 1 flyer, they look like your group on the red and white target.
I have been blaming it on a heavy trigger, but when I saw your pattern it lookded very similar to mine. I just changed out the spring in my trigger and anxious to try it again to see if I still have the 1 flyer.

hmmm intresting i thought that was just me. I dont know if its just me or my gun. But I get alot more consistant groups when the barrel is warm. my groups start looking alot better after about 10 rounds down the tube.

I'm noticing the same phenomenon with my .223 Shilen 1 in 8 twist, groups start to tighten up after 10 rounds. My barrel has 400 round throught it since I installed it last month.

I believe that is about how many rounds im sitting at in my rifle also gacop. does your gun shoot better dirty or clean. my cousins predator .223 only like to shoot good clean. I have went 50 rounds at the range with out cleaning and it doesn't seem to make a difference. but after I do clean my rifle. I might as well throw that target out. Its not just one flier
