I use an FV12 22-250 for dogs and always put on my fixed 36x Tasco with 1/8 dot and fine crosshairs. Hold over and under is done with the dot and I will dial in wind. I use a bench or table with bipods or a rest so it makes it easy to find my target and with such a heavy gun and mild recoil I can see my poi and adjust. A good fixed high power target scope is a lot less money than a variable and is good for working up loads and long distance and perfect for dog shoots. You can't the Tasco anymore but there are a lot of choices out there.
