I want to replace my scope rail. I ordered a night force 20 moa. It came with what is suppose to be the correct mounting screws 6 X 48. They are way too small. So I ordered 6 X 48 and 8 X 40 screws. Neither fit. #6 is too small a diameter, and the #8 is the correct diameter but the wrong thread pitch.
The Gun:
Savage 110 FCP in 338 Lapua Magnum. Bought a year ago brandy new.
The receiver is a long action of course.
Everything I have read says 6 X 48 but they are so small you can remove them without unthreading them.
So are these things metric?

Should be the 8-40 screws. You may need to run a tap through first to chase the threads. It is very common for Savages to have buggered up threads brand new. Makes it seem like the screws are wrong.

I assume the threads are not cut perfectly. I have a tap coming in the mail to chase the threads and new screws coming as well.

I was thinking of your thread when I answered this one. That is exactly it! Savage drills the scope mount holes before finish reaming & polishing the bolt channel. This forces flashing & burrs into the threads. But they don't chase the threads afterwards. Very typical on Savage rifles.
