The indexed recoil lug is most definitely a problem. There is no room for anything but a near perfect recoil lug alignment due to the design of the stock. if the action is put in a bind when tightening , you will have poor results. Is the rifle new or used? I dont think I saw a reference to anything but " I bought a...."

What if the action /threads are damaged ?

What would be the cause?

OP, If you have ever barreled a Accustock rifle you have seen where the lack of alignment pin makes good alignment difficult.

So I did two things today. 1st got a hold of a local smith who was kind enough to drop what he was doing and scope the bore for free. The tool chatter was so bad that he called the rest of the employees out to have a laugh! The barrel literally looks like they tried to thread the bore! There is evidence of chatter from tooling all throughout.

Secondly, I contacted Savage who did not offer to cover shipping, but recommended sending it in for warranty. He obviously wouldn't promise anything but said if they were deemed at fault it would be repaired and test fired to meet the claim of 5 shots in a 1 inch group at 100 yards. He claimed a 4-6 week turnaround time with the holidays included so I will most likely go this route. Also learned that the Accustock models are the only Savage rifles that do not come with a recoil lug that has an indexing pin on it. This is due to the stock design and not the receiver.

These tooling marks are common with Savage barrels. They have been referred to as "Train Tracks" in other threads. Look it up! Barrels with those still shoot great! People get themselves a borescope & are instantly CONVINCED the barrel is TRASH! Even if it was just shooting BUGHOLES! I've seen worse barrels shoot great in fact. The recoil lug IS way canted, and the wearing in the Aluminum bedding stock, once again, is evidence to the problem. That can cause all kinds of weird harmonics & creep. You have the tools, just break it loose and index the recoil lug correctly first. All this crying about warranty from some... GOOD GREIF!!

With all do respect, Dave, I am going to send this rifle back to Savage. I will only be responsible for the one way shipping to them and they assured me that they would send it back test fired and shooting to it’s accuracy claims. As much as I would like to use my tools, in my opinion this choice seems to be the best since it is practically a new rifle and if something bigger is to blame then it will be remedied and not at my expense.

The rep that I spoke to said I’ve already done what is recommended, clean and check optic mounting hardware, try a trusted optic, and then check the action screws. I fear that if I remove the barrel nut and barrel that they would be less interested in helping me down the road.

Also, you’re correct about the tool markings in the Savage barrels being normal. At least in my rifles. I looked down my 450 Bushmaster Wolverine and my 110 270 and they appear the same. I appreciate everyone taking the time to respond with advice! I’ll follow up when I get the rifle back.

Am glad you are sending it back. Sounds like something is seriously wrong.

And, yes, most Savage barrels look like that. Mine both do. But, I can't complain about how they shoot, just how hard they are to get clean :)

Ah, yeah... I was just talking out loud man, LOL. I do agree with not doing a task unless one has utter confidence or a drive to do so. So, sending it to Savage is the right call. I would however, discretely mark the barrel, lug & nut with a scribe. You’ll know if any component was replaced, or simply “moved”....which is what I’m willing to bet is going to be the outcome. Let us know.
