Bought another Savage bolt from Midway. $129 plus $5 shipping, plus tax, minus $25.
This is the absolute worst bolt lift I have ever felt. You have to hold the rifle when going over the notch on open.
I hope this isn't the norm for Savage.
Thinking of keeping it stock as an example of heavy lift. :)

We ran a balance test yesterday on the 3 post positions on her ShadeTree top.
Seems middle position gave the smallest groups, Maybe.

Think I am almost done with Bolt lift, Spring Force, and Pin Fall.
Setting up 2 Bolts for the next practice session with the Savage.
Increased Spring Force a little
Will do a video of Cocking Force with my Digital Torque Wrench, maybe tomorrow.
Most of the data is in the pics.
Spring force measurement was a little IFFY on a platform scale.
Spring is the EGW 10660.

How are you drilling it? Dom you have a lathe or mill?

I'm NOT drilling the bolt head.
Just measuring where the end of the pin is.
Try it, how far in is your pin when cocked?
That's on the shelf, not on the sear though.

Here is a STOCK BOLT compared to Bolt 2 above.
I'm guessing I have more pin fall than a stock bolt. :)
Pin fall is adjustable with the cocking pin nut, about 0.036" per turn.
Spring preload is adjustable with shims behind the Carbide Mic Tip.
Quick and Easy to do, even at the range.

How much is too much?

I did drill the end of the cocking piece 1/4" X 2 threads in a drill press.

Gotcha, I do not know. Fred do you have any idea how much pin fall is acceptable?

BTW:Sharp Shooter Supply set my firing pin when I had my action timed and trued and I am not tinkering with it! Hahahha

Good stuff Rocket!

AGREE, I would not mess with Fred's work.
If you have the time could you measure pin protrusion and then depth with the pin cocked, unless you had to sign an NDA :) ?
