View Full Version : 112 accuracy with toasted throat

I bought a single shot model 12BVSS in .223 Remington at an internet auction. It was as I surmised an older pre accutrigger model but overall very nice shape, well cared for.
I was doing my normal procedure of measuring twist rate (1-12) and checking how far o.a.l. needed to be for various bullets to touch the lands.
Even my longest 70 grain bullet would not touch the lands before the bullet was out of the neck. Borescope exam showed that the lands for the throat were gone for about twice as far in the barrel compared to a new barrel.
I can set back the barrel face and rechamber it if needed and I have a 1-7 twist barrel ordered so I can shoot the longer heavier bullets.
I have several test loads ready for the range.
The question is, how bad would the groups need to be to justify a rechamber or how good would they have to be to to NOT rechamber?
Those that have all ready done this, I would very much like to hear about your result.

Some of the newer style bullets like plenty of jump so you might just find a compromise that you are happy with. Closer isn't always better for a .223. Whatta Hobby!

If it is a 1:12 twist then you'll be limited to lighter bullets. Get some 55gn match kings or Hornady ELD's and go for it.

How worn is too much? That's a relative question. If someone shoots prairie dogs at 500yd they want better accuracy than someone who shoots at 100yd. Competition shooters might toss a barrel that 'only' shoots 1/2MOA where I am happy with that level for my shooting.

O.k. I know everyone was wondering how it did at 100 yards for it's first test. 5 shout groups.

23.5 Tac, LC93, Rem 7 1/2

Sierra 50 smp 5=1.055
Speer 50 TNT 5=1.825 (4=.600)
Hornady 52 match 5=.760
Sierra 55 Blitz King 5=.860

Nosler 62 Varmageddon 23.3 Tac 5=.437
Nosler 62 Varmageddon 23.6 Tac 5=.655
Nosler 62 Varmageddon 23.9 Tac 5=.485

I was glad to see the 62 Varmageddons stabilize and group well, I did not think they would with a 1-12 twist barrel.

Now before my new 1-7 twist barrel arrives, I will face of the factory barrel and re-chamber it as practice. There should be no down side in accuracy and the barrel should last another 7-9 K rounds.

Sounds like a worthwhile plan.
