Not a .308, but earlier this year I picked up 2 .30-06 Axis XP’s for 199.99 each from Wally World. There was also a $60.00 rebate on each for those rifles. So there are deals out there.

It is a decent donor rifle, BUT, some parts that fit the 110 series won't fit the Axis. And someone mentioned the bolts. They are not as smooth as the 110 series. I happen to like the accutrigger on my Axis II. It is not as good as the one on my 12BVSS. And, the Axis does not have bottom metal, it is plastic. My .223 HB is in a Boyd's stock and shoots well under MOA. Unless I go out to 600yd it is almost boring to shoot. :)
If I wanted just an action I'd go to the local gun shop and find a used 110 series rifle with the length action I wanted. I'd spend the 'big' money on a good barrel and stock.
the cheapest 2 options in Savage rifles are the Axis II and the Savage 12 FV (Cabelas exclusive). $420.00
When I built my 308, I searched gunbroker and found a good used one with a sporter barrel and the cheap plastic stock. Got it for a really good deal, much less than a new one. Since I only wanted the action, I did not care about the stock, barrel, or caliber, as long as it had the correct bolt head.
Do not turn down a good used one.
Are you planning a new barrel swap anyway? I searched Gunbroker until I found a used model 10 w/ Accutrigger, in 243win, for $170. I was planning to barrel it for 260 Rem from the beginning. It was a 10 Youth in 243, cheap black plastic stock and all, and I turned it into BEAST!

Used Savages are a great resource!
