As I read it, the OP wanted a "walkabout" rifle with the same point blank range, killing power and weight as a 280 AI
If he's willing to lug a full size, long action bolt gun, a used 26" stainless older 700 in 7mm Remmag is a better buy than any Savage 280 AI. Recoil is not an issue when hunting and, of course, the Big Green 7 can be handloaded down to 7mm TCU levels if you wish.
If as he implies, weight and "handiness" are core needs, the SIG and the Kimber are probably the best choices.
The only Savage coming close is the ultra-light that does not come in 280 AI and is longer OAL.
The Fury, as all SIG products, is a great item. Those who think otherwise have never seen/handles/shot one.
