Well, I just finished the build with a Criterion prefit Jim sent me in 6.5 X 47 Lapua. Wow, barrel is beautiful. not a mark of skuff on it. Well packaged and mailed. Built it my first day home ( on leave from Afghanistan) and shot it the next. With new lapua brass ( NO prep at all, right out of the box), 34-37.5 grains of varget ( thrown with a powder measure), and SMK 120's ( no sorting at all) had groups under 1/2" ( 5rds) with the 36.5, 37, 37.5 grain loads. SMK's were .010 off the lands. Now the fun begins. Preping brass, hand weighting charges, and playing with seating depth I think I can cut the group size in half. This barrel is OUTSTANDING. I WILL be ordering a couple more before I return. Thanxs Jim
Jim,
Any chance a 300wsm reamer might find its way onto the list? Love to try one of these in a 300wsm small shank.
Hi Jim,
What are the prices for having a barrel fluted and the muzzle end threaded?
Thanks in advance,
Bob
Bob,
The CBI Barrel Fluting is $140.00. The Muzzle threading will run you $70.00.

Ordered a 20 Practical a little while ago, can't wait to see ho it does.
Sound like you've got a winner! Enjoy it while your home (as much as the little lady will allow) before you head back to the "sand box".Quote:

Good info, I'll have to try that. I was always under the impression the SMKs didn't like to be jammed. You learn something every day.
1st 3 shot group, fireforming brass to 260 AI...fired 6 shots to check function, then this group...accuracy should go REAL small after i use good bullets and powder...group @100 http://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...IMG_1198-1.jpghttp://i727.photobucket.com/albums/w...r/IMG_1189.jpg
I would like to thank all the site sponsors for the componets, all the members for the fantastic advice, knowledge, and general help in the planning, building and ultimitly, the awesome performance i expect this to be capable of......Fred @SSS, This bbl is on it's way to you for one of your muzzle brakes, Jim B. need to talk to about a CBI 260 AI SS ultralight bbl. rsbhunter
I just ordered a 6.5x284 Norma Criterion barrel from Jim and it should be here in about two weeks. Does anyone know the O.D. of the barrel just in front of the action? It is a Varmint contour. I want to make sure I have the right size bushings for my barrel vise.
just under 1.055" would be my guessQuote:

Just got my 7mm SAUM Criterion barrel from Jim. Looks great, matches the Savage PTA finish almost spot on. Its 28 inches and a straight taper. I hope it shoots as good as it looks. Hope to have some info in a few weeks. I have a lot of brass and prep work to do.

Looks great 1500J! Welcome to the forum. You'll find a lot of good info on here.
1500j welcome to the forum.
That is one awesome loooking rifle, tell us more about it.
It has the Savage Precision Target Action right bolt Left Port as a base. I got the Bell And Carlson Medalist stock from Stockystocks with 4.4 spaced screws. Stock only came with 2 screws holes, so I fiberglassed in a 3rd pillar for the center screw that the PTA has. I need to float the stock out a bit for the barrel, its just touching with the full bull.
Now the barrel is a 28 inch 1-9 barrel made by Criterion. 7mmRSAUM. I hope either the 162 a-max shoots well, or the 180 VLD Berger.
Its mostly for play, but may enter some local F_Class if it performs.
It has the Weaver 20MOA base with Weaver 6 screw rings. I like the idea of aluminum above the action. Less mass to move under recoil. Just a theory tho.... Scope is a 16xSS SWFA. The scope actually is better than I thought it would be. It flares quite a bit looking anywheres close to the sun tho...
I have two bolts for this gun. The standard (308 size) and the Magnum size. I hope to be able to run 2-3 different set ups off this action. Id like to have a 22-25o barrel, 243 barrel and the 7mmSAUM and possibly a 308 someday.
That about sums it up. I travel to WY a couple times a year, and have access to ranges well over a mile out there :)
Thanks.
I think I have one of these barrels on order. Or maybe not. I have not heard from Jim yet about the total price with shipping. So I have not paid for it yet.
Anybody heard from Jim in the last week or so?
Are you out there Jim?
Perhaps he has not received my order. Anyone know for sure Jim's email address?
With SSS damn near impossible to get ahold of (and seemingly unwilling to answer emails), seems like a lot of business has shifted to Jim & NSS.
I have found it sometimes takes a day or two for him to touch base with you...but he always does, even after 8pm sometimes.
Jim's email is on the NSS page and is briggs.j-b@q.com....but my experience is email replies are more hit-or-miss than phone calls.
Definitely give him a call. I've always done my business with Jim over the phone. He is a great guy to deal with.Quote:

I agree Jim is top notch. I am very new to the Savage stuff and had a few questions, which Jim was great to walk me through. I ordered a bbl from him last week, I think it was Thursday or Friday and got a call from his wife on Monday that they had already shipped it. I do know that he had his call waiting turned off so now you just get a busy tone if he's on the horn. Keep calling, eventually it will ring.
Oh yeah, 1500j, that thing's wickedly cool. Post some results when it's up and running.
Noooooo!!!!!! Leave him alone so he will have time to ship my barrel. :)Quote:

I talked with Jim today wanting to order a barrel his site said was in stock. Not to be, he is a little behind in updating his in stock/out of stock barrel list. So don't just think he has what you want because it says "in stock".
Has anyone bought a sporter or heavy sporter? I'm wanting to build a lighter weight hunting rifle in 6.5x47.
Do It! And report backQuote:

Baja, what stock do you plan on using?
Here's an update, my phone system has been fighting me somewhat. I have had some calls go to the automated phone answering system even when I was available. Some of these seem to have gone to ??? ?. I now have all overload lines and answering systems eliminated. If you call and it rings busy I am actually on the phone now. If I miss your call you will have to call back.
I was gone for the last 4 days hunting Turkey. Brenda and I have spent the entire day getting caught up with almost all outstanding orders if I have the parts, barrels or rifles in stock. My order lead times are down to a few days if the phone does not keep me too busy.
I had a call from a very talented California shooter that installed his Large Shank - 6.5X47 Lapua Criterion Barrel. He shot it at a NRA sanctioned shoot and missed tying the current Worlds Record 600 yard F-Class score by one point. These Criterion Barrels have really been shooting well.

Here's a little range report on my new CBI. Its a 28 inch SS Varmint Taper on a standard shank and chambered in 6BR with a 1-8" twist.
This group was shot today under calm weather conditions. I did shoot 1 and clean for the first shot and then every 3 up through shot #20. Let the barrel cool and clean again. Then made this 5 shot group at 100yds.

Sorry about the blurry shot, had to use my phone camera again, since the Kodak was being difficult as ussual.
Shot measured .331" center to center of the two farthest shots. Load was a 58gr V-Max over Varget and a CCI Small Rifle Primer. It was just the starting load in my manual and I would say it shows real promise.
This CBI is going to be a real shooter I think.
Were you able to seat the 58gr Vmax to the lands? Or did you just pick a COL to go with?Quote:

I also loaded some 100gr Seirra's Sptz and had them just off the lands and the best I got out of them was 1.375ish for 3 shots (I shot 3 groups of 3). I didn't have a lot of hope for those anyway but I figured I had them I'll give them a try.
I have a few others to play with so we will see but I just thought that was pretty darn good for right out of the gate with just a thrown together load to break in the barrel, using the 58's.
No picture of the rifle?Quote:

Currently I mounted the 6.5x284 on my painted stock, but it has been bedded to the factory recoil lug and I was not able to use the new machined recoil lug I got from Jim. I am going to do the barrel break in and first shot on a couple dozen pieces of brass, and then move this barrel to the other gun that also has a better trigger and should be able to accept the larger recoil lug.

Question
One thing I noticed is that I got the standard finish, it is highly polished. I am not to worried about reflections in the field, but it seems to mark up very easily. Just sliding along my wood barrel blocks left a mark, one walk thru the woods and its not going to look new anymore. Is there any way to protect that or easily restore/remove surface markings that are not deep scratches?
Baja, do you know what the approximate weight of that 6.5X284 is?
I'm having very good luck with this Criterion 28" Bull 1:10 twist. I shot at 200, 300 and 600 yesterday at Quantico, VA and had nothing out of the 10 ring. The target was actually too big considering the 200 yd line (MR-63F), was correct for the 300 (MR-63F) and too small for the 600 (MR-65F). Winds were light and I was using Berger 155.5 gr FMJ BTHP stuck into Lapua brass with 44gr Varget.Quote:

Answering two questions here:
Guhunter - I do not have a 24" Heavy Sporter Barrel in stock but I do have a 26" Heavy Sporter. The 26" one weighs just under 3 lb.
Bajabill - If you use a medium grit 3M Scotch Brite pad cut to about 5" X 8" you can wrap it around the barrel and using hand pressure to hold it against your barrel. Rotating your 3M Pad one direction and your barrel in the other (reverse at end of travel) you will get a easily maintainable semi polished surface. It will reduce the shine slightly but it is easily touched up by yourself if needed. Go in a circular direction only. If you go up and down at the same time you will not be happy with the finish.

I'll put a pic up here once I get my Camera fixed. Darn thing is being very difficult. It looks basically like the one in my avatar. That pic was of my 243AI and I unscrewed the 243AI and screwed on the CBI 6BR and added one of Jim's ground lugs.Quote:

Weight, since its on the gun now, I have to do some cyferin
This barrel has a contour that matches the 338win mag very closely, 24" 338 win mag weighs 2.85lb
my 25-06 and 30-06 have similar contours, both 22", the 25 weighs .15 lb more due to the smaller dia bore
.338-.264 dia = .25 lb
Im guessing the 6.5x284 weighs about 3.102 lbs.
Got picture
6.5x284, 24" heavy sporter contour, installed on gun, factory 110 stock
338 win mag, 24", factory heavy sporter or mag contour
7mmRemMag, 24", sporter contour
35whelen, 24" A&B barrel, more constant taper than the 338 but similar dia at muzzle, heavier
