Hello SavageAR15Nut, interesting concept. Can you tell us a bit more.
Sure. So I wondered why this (barrel nut) wasn't already available and voiced it to the wife. She complained that I never did anything with my crazy ideas. Anyhow, long story short I filed for provisional and no provisional patents for it in hope that someone would make it for other guys like me and pay me back for patent and R&D costs.
The he idea is that most guys already have ar15 armory tools and they already make lightweight free float handguards that work with the nut, so why not mix the savage small shank inner dimensions with the outer dimensions of the standard ar15 barrel nut. It turns out that this works well with the fortis rev, rev2 and APC old style handguards and likely the Samson evolution rail. It did not work well with the Troy handguards since their is not enough clearance between the id of the nut and the od of the barrel to get the little clamps in and fasten it down.
the top few pictures are shown with a hacked off lss from MDT; however most people might see that as an expensive system. That's what drove me to cut off the old wooden stock and sand it a bit so it might look like it belonged.
Farrel industries made the scope rail for me and it lines up with the fortis very well. Farrel industries does great work and they have saved this info so it will make it easier for anyone else building a rifle like this. APC gave me their handguard to try it was a much stiffer system than the fortis but installation and nut timing was more difficult than the fortis.
hope you enjoy the pictures. It seems savage small shanks aren't enough business for the major players to make this or they simply don't see the profit margin in it. So if you like the looks or the idea pray for help finding a Mfg that can bring this to fellow savage owners.
Im AD AF with in charge of a flight of 150ish Airmen and a brand new baby so I am not starting a business anytime soon. Any feedback would be welcomed.
thanks for the interest
same here..send us your guns if you gonna drink.
Here is the latest version of my Annabelle. Took her out on Sunday, and my buddy and I thinned out the dog and squirrel population by 100+. Good day all around, even though we got rained on most of the day. I was surprised to see the ground squirrels moving like they were, so we made the most of it. I spun a new barrel on this thing, and is did extremely well!! I thought so anyways, even though the vermin didn't agree so much.
